Mijo Pozgaj

Mijo Pozgaj arrived at Ellis Island on 25 March, 1909 when he was 18 years old. Records indicate he arrrived on the Gothland (below) and departed from Antwerp. According to the Ellis Island record, is last place of residence was Martin, Hungary, but we know he was born in Molvice, Croatia and was active in supporting the Sveti Martin pod Okicem (Croatia) school. Look closely at line #0023 on the manifest below.

Built by Harlan & Wolff Limited, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1893. 7,669 gross tons; 490 (bp) feet long; 53 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engines, twin screw. Service speed 14 knots. 1,800 passengers (1,800 third class). Built for White Star and Dominion Lines, in 1893 and named Gothic. England-New Zealand freighter service. Nearly destroyed by fired [sic] in 1906; later repaired. Sold to Red Star Line, British flag, in 1913 and renamed Gothland. Antwerp-New York service. Used as a freighter in 1919; reverted to passenger service in 1920. Scrapped in Scotland in 1926. (source Ellis Island)

Magda Kufrin

Magdica Kufrin arrived at Ellis Island on 26 March, 1914 when she was 17 years old. Records indicate she arrrived on the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse (below) and departed from Bremen. Her last Place of residence was Molvice, Croatia. Look closely at line #0007 on the manifest below.

Built by A/G Vulcan Shipyard, Stettin, Germany, 1897. 14,439 gross tons; 655 (bp) feet long; 66 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engines, twin screw. Service speed 22 knots. 1,970 passengers (558 first class, 338 second class, 1,074 third class). Built for North German Lloyd, German flag, in 1897 and named Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. Bremerhaven-New York service. World's large liner 1897-99; world's fastest liner 1897-1900. Scuttled in Spanish West Africa to avoid capture by the British on August 26, 1914. (source Ellis Island)
